This is a question that has intrigued many people: Is God truly a man, a human, or is God neither? This is a mystery I do not definitively know the answer to, but growing up, I have always referred to God as 'Him' or 'Father,' suggesting that I see God as male. This tradition is not unique to me; it is how everyone around me has always spoken of God. But does this necessarily mean that God has a gender?
Certain perspectives posit that God exists beyond gender, not confined to either male or female attributes. To explore this, we first need to consider who God is. We understand God to be a spirit, but what kind of spirit? Does this spirit assume a masculine or feminine form? As far as I understand, spirits do not reproduce or bear children. Therefore, in the spiritual realm, the physical body parts that define gender here on earth seem unnecessary.
One way to delve deeper into this question is by looking at the Bible. In the beginning, God created man and saw that man was lonely, so He gave man a woman. This raises another question: Why did God create a man first and not a woman? Is it because God is a man? This can be argued both ways.
Some might argue that God created man first because God is male, and thus man was made in God's likeness. However, it is also asserted that all humans, regardless of gender, were created in the image of God. On the other hand, one could argue that God created man first and woman second because God is female, and only a female deity would understand that man would need a companion.
We could debate this endlessly and still be no closer to an answer until we transition from this world to the spiritual one and see for ourselves. For now, what do I believe? I believe that God is neither male nor female because gender classifications are based on physical attributes and reproductive organs, which I do not think are necessary in heaven. However, I could be wrong.
I do believe that God embodies the characteristics often associated with maleness, much like most of the angels in heaven appear to. But there are also angels who resemble females. What we see on earth in terms of nature, genetic makeup, and all the wonders of creation is a reflection of the heavens. Thus, for now, I conclude that God is neither male nor female but has a form and features that we might perceive as male.
